AN EXCERPT FROM
THREE SISTERS, OR THE DORMOUSE’S TALE
By Christopher Mirto and Brian Valencia
(A sickening creaking noise is heard as a large wooden bucket descends from the heavens on a heavy chain.)
(The word “André” echoes up the shaft.)
(rushing to peek inside)
He’s the only man we’ll ever need! The only one we can ever count on.
#2a André’s Cello Cues Cello
(A cello plays a beautiful melodic phrase way up and out of sight.)
Has he packed something for us this time!?
He must have heard us celebrating your un-birthday, Irina. Look! Party favors, and a gift for you.
(ANDRÉ’s cello responds.)
(holding her gift box)
Why, we must have the—the best brother in the whole world! Thank you, André!
(“André” echoes. HE continues to play.)
Oh, listen to him play!
Go ahead! Open your present!
It’s . . . a set of finger paints, and . . . cheese.
Oh— . . .
(SHE gives it to the DORMOUSE. ANDRÉ plays.)
(with all the warmth and love in her heart)
No, André, I don’t know why a raven is like a writing desk.
